Bust in Battergate Blows Up

Vicki Vale, Staff Writer (OOC: Spoiler)
An intense gun battle broke out at the Ditko Arms tenement house in Battergate yesterday evening after Gotham City Police detective Kimba Wells singlehandedly attempted an arrest at the apartment of local reputed drug dealer Kevin "Pooky" Wallace, when several men in the room allegedly went for weapons. Detective Wells jumped out of a nearby window to escape, at which point, according to witnesses at the scene, several members of Gotham City's costumed vigilante community descended in force on the building.
"There were Bat-people everywhere," stated one bystander wheeling a grocery cart. "I seen Batman jump into the building and that there Bat-lady helping that cop what jumped out da windah." By the time the police responded to Detective Wells' request for backup, all suspects were completely incapacitated.
Corroborating witness accounts were the words of Frankie "Nutsack" Flinders, reputed to be a friend of Wallace, who was found on the roof, bound hand and foot. As uniformed officers led him to a patrol car, he was reported to be "ranting and raving" that "the Batgirl had brained him with an iron bar".
Forensics experts at the scene discovered the remains of flash grenades, smoke pellets, and other non-lethal weaponry consistent with the notorious "Bat-clan's" methods of operation, as well as a cache of what appeared to be heavily damaged anti-personnel devices in a plastic case on a building ledge nearby, which police department analysts have positively linked to the mysterious Batwoman.
According to an unnamed source at the police department, at least fifteen minutes before Detective Wells called in for backup, a 911 operator received an anonymous tip that shots had been fired in Battergate at the address of Kevin Wallace's apartment, but no action had been taken. When asked if the department placed a lower priority on calls from depressed or lower-income neighborhoods, a representative of the Media Relations Office declared that "all of Gotham City is equally a priority," but "response time may suffer from more limited resources" due to recent budget cuts and downsizing.
A representative of the Commissioner's office has stated that while Detective Wells' conduct in the incident was still under review, she "acted in the finest traditions of the department" and disciplinary action was unlikely.
